A Statement of Support from Thirty-Five Clergy Members Across Five Christian Denominations.
We, the undersigned, SUPPORT Freedom Amendment (G), protecting a woman’s ability to obtain a safe, legal abortion in South Dakota during the first trimester of pregnancy. We represent Christian denominations that recognize that people of faith have diverse views on this subject, and each one is called to moral decision-making in their context.
As faith leaders, we find our faith homes in denominations that recognize the dignity of every individual, each created in the image of God. Our sacred texts and traditions emphasize justice, compassion, and care of the vulnerable. In alignment with these values, we believe ALL individuals should have the ability to make deeply personal and informed medical decisions, including the decision to terminate a pregnancy. As we lead as pastors, we do so in spaces where there has long been support for reproductive justice.
We affirm the sanctity of developing life in the womb. We also affirm the sanctity of the pregnant person’s life. Unfortunately, there are real-life circumstances in which there may be issues of life versus life. Our pastoral care experiences have taught us that complicated health-care decisions are best left to the patient in consultation with families and health-care providers, and as part of faith conversations. This should happen without interference from politicians or the courts.
The teachings of Jesus Christ call us to love our neighbors as ourselves and to stand with those who are marginalized and vulnerable. As Christians, we look to Jesus as the model for our own lives, noting his teachings and how he interacted with people during his lifetime. Instead of abstract debates, Jesus focused on the person in front of him. When facing a man with a withered hand, Jesus healed him in spite of the laws of Sabbath. When a hemorrhaging woman touched his garment for healing, Jesus praised her faith regardless of the purity laws and codes she had broken. Jesus centered on the one in need.
Freedom Amendment (G) supports those who are pregnant as they make decisions about their own bodies without government interference. We urge lawmakers, community leaders, and fellow citizens to support the Freedom Amendment (G).
May we continue to be guided by the principles of love, compassion, and respect for all people in our advocacy and ministry.
