Bipartisan Network Steps Up to End South Dakota’s Radical Abortion Ban Forcing Victims of Rape, Even Children, to Give Birth
June 20, 2024
Sioux Falls, SD...The South Dakota Advocacy Network for Women (SDANW) has officially endorsed Amendment G, a ballot measure to restore abortion rights in the state by overturning South Dakota’s extreme abortion ban. This ban, which came into effect after the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, forces victims of rape, including children, to carry pregnancies to term and has resulted in women leaving the state to receive routine medical care for complicated pregnancies.
“The trigger laws that became effective in South Dakota when Roe v. Wade was overturned have forced pregnant women with serious complications to leave South Dakota for medical care and prevented physicians from providing needed services to their patients,” said South Dakota State Senator and SDANW Chair Linda Lea Viken, a former judge and state senator, “the Network believes that these health decisions are best left to the persons who are most affected.”
Adam Weiland, co-founder of Dakotans for Health and co-chair of Amendment G, expressed excitement over the endorsement, “We are thrilled to have the support of the bipartisan South Dakota Advocacy Network for Women. They have long fought for fairness and equality in our state, and together we are going to win this thing!”
Amendment G, which will be on the 2024 ballot, seeks to restore the reproductive rights South Dakota women held under Roe v. Wade and end the state’s near-total abortion ban. Under the current ban, even victims of rape and incest have no legal option for abortion, making South Dakota one of the most restrictive states in the country.
